A month has passed since the beginning of the crisis in Sri Lanka. Popularity does not cool down unless it continues to grow. Protests are raging for the resignation of the entire Rajapaksa family. Protesters have been marching in front of the presidential palace for days demanding the same. Protests continue unabated for arrests and beatings. Why are people who have been worshiping the Rajapaksa dynasty for two decades now incensed when the name is mentioned?
Sri Lankan politics is proving that the words written by the great poet "Sri Sri" a decades ago are still literal truth about how degenerate this country is, plagued by corruption, nepotism, and the dark market. The kinship and corruption of the Rajapaksa family not only made the country economically degenerate but also created disgust among the people in the family. The Rajapaksas have been in power for almost two decades.
Their party, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), was born in February 1948, before Sri Lanka gained independence. That family's reign in politics began when its founder, Dan Alvin Rajapaksa, was elected to Parliament. Alvin's sons, Prime Minister Mahinda, President Gotabhaya, Chamil, and Basil's brothers, have placed power in their guppies.
The four brothers have been blamed for Sri Lanka's current plight. Their sons Namal, Yoshita, and Shashindra are also ready to spin the wheel as future generation leaders. From 2010 to 2015, when Mahinda became President for a second term, more than 40 members of the family held government positions! Most of them have been charged with financial crimes. 78% of the country's debts were made during the Rajapaksa regime!
Basil Rajapaksa (70)
Former Finance Minister
The youngest of the reunions. As finance minister, he pushed the country into crisis with manipulative decisions. The contract Any 10 percent commission Muttajeppalsinde. That is why Basil is called Mr. 10%.
Mahinda Rajapaksa (76)
Prime Minister
The most popular leader. President for ten years from 2005. The special Tamil movement was suppressed with a steel foot. In May 2009, after decades of civil war, he was anonymized by a military operation and became a fan of Sinhala-Buddhists. Sri Lanka came closer to China during the Mahinda regime. It borrowed $ 700 billion more than the infrastructure concept. That debt burden was exacerbated by massive corruption in those projects. He is alleged to have amassed a combined $ 1.9 billion.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa (72)
President
Anna is the right arm of Mahinda. He has held many senior positions during his presidency. In 2005, he was appointed Permanent Secretary of Defense. Gotabhaya was behind the mass rapes, violence, and killings of Tamil rebels during the civil war. He has the brand name Fire and is known by his family as the Terminator. He retained the defense ministry when he became president in 2019. The granting of unlimited executive powers to the President in October 2020 was controversial.
Chamal Rajapaksa (79)
Minister of Irrigation
Mahinda was the Speaker while he was the President. The name Bodyguard was established when Sirimavo Bandaru, the world's first female Prime Minister, became a personal bodyguard. Currently Minister of Irrigation. He is the only one who is not so controversial in Annadammu.
Namal Rajapaksa (35)
Minister of Sports and Youth
Son of Mahinda. He was elected to Parliament in 2010 at the age of 24. Ever dreamed of becoming president. While Mahinda was president, he spun the wheel without any office and there were other allegations of corruption against him.
