Sindhu in the prequarters

 


MANILA: Indian shuttlers suffered mixed results at the Asian Badminton Championships on Wednesday. In the women's singles, star players PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal worked hard to take the lead, while Kidambi Srikanth stepped into the quarterfinals with a resounding victory. ‘Double Olympic medalist’ PV Sindhu defeated Pai Yu Po (Chinese Taipei) 18–21, 27–25, 21–9 in the first round. The fight lasted for 77 minutes. Pi Yu Po, ranked 39th in the world, competed hard with the top Indian player and won the first game. The second game also went horribly wrong with 52 points.

Sindhu, who finally used all his experience to win the game, broke into the third game and broke through the opponent. In another match, Saina Nehwal defeated Sim Yujin (South Korea) 21–15, 17–21, 21–13. In the men's singles, Srikanth defeated Jay Young (Malaysia) 22–20, and 21–15. World Championship bronze medalist Lakshya Sen exited in the first round. Fifth seed Sen lost 21–12, 10–21, 19–21 to Li Shi Feng (China) while Saipraneeth lost 17–21, 13–21 to fourth seed Jonathan Christie (Indonesia). Other Indian players Akarshi Kashyap, Malvika Bansod, and Simner Singh-Rhita Thackeray failed to cross the first round.
