New Delhi: Union Roads and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that the day is not far when electric vehicles (EVs) will be cheaper than petrol vehicles domestically.
On the other hand, Tesla, the American electric car giant, reiterated while participating in an event that it would be beneficial for the company to manufacture vehicles in India. Gadkari has already clarified that he has no objection to Tesla, the CEO of Alan Musk, producing his EVs in India, but selling them here in China.
Currently imported cars are subject to 60–100% tariff depending on the size and cost of the engine. Ultimately, Tesla says it will have to bear the burden of import tariffs of up to 110% on car costs, and if it is reduced to allow it to be sold in India, the funds will be invested domestically to strengthen the electric vehicle system. However, the Center has made it clear that it will not change the rules for Tesla.
